SUSHUMNA NADI (SPINAL CORD)
In addition
to chakras, there are three important nadis i.e. Sushumna Nadi (spinal
cord), Ida Nadi and Pingala Nadi. The sushumna nadi is
located in backbone and it ensures the circulation of energy in the body
through cerebrospinal fluid. The Ida Nadi symbolises Chandra (moon)
and is located to the left of Sushumna Nadi while Pingala Nadi
symbolises surya (sun) and is located to the right. The Ida represents
negative and Pingala positive character. While the Sushumna acts
as a balancing factor. The Chakras absorb the universal life force while
the Nadis ensure circulation of energy in the body. The nervous system is an organ system containing a network
of specialized cells called neurons that coordinate the actions of an animal
and transmit signals between different parts of its body.
In
most animals, the nervous system consists of two parts, central and peripheral.
The central nervous system of vertebrates (such as humans) contains the brain,
spinal cord and retina. The peripheral nervous system consists of sensory
neurons, clusters of neurons called ganglia and nerves connecting them to each
other and to the central nervous system. These regions are all interconnected
by means of complex neural pathways. The vertebrate nervous system can also be
divided into areas called grey matter and white matter. Grey matter contains a
high proportion of cell bodies of neurons. Grey matter is found in clusters of
neurons in the brain and spinal cord and in cortical layers that line their
surfaces. White matter includes all of the nerves and much of the interior of
the brain and spinal cord. Sensory neurons are activated by physical stimuli
impinging on them, and send signals that inform the central
nervous system of the state of the body and the
external environment. Motor neurons situated either in the central nervous
system or in peripheral ganglia, connect the nervous system to muscles or other
effecter organs. Central neurons, which in vertebrates greatly outnumber the
other types, make all of their input and output connections with other neurons.
The interactions of all these types of neurons form neural circuits that
generate an organism's perception of the world and determine its behaviour.
The
spinal cord is a long, thin, tubular bundle of nervous tissue. The brain and
spinal cord together make up the central nervous system (CNS). The length of
the spinal cord is much shorter than the length of the bony spinal column. The spinal
cord is connected to the brain and is about the diameter of a human finger.
From the brain the spinal cord descends down the middle of the back and is
surrounded and protected by the bony vertebral column. The spinal cord is
surrounded by a clear fluid called Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF), that acts as a
cushion to protect the delicate nerve tissues against damage from banging
against the inside of the vertebrae. The spinal cord is about 45 cm
(18 in) long in men and around 43 cm (17 in) in women,
ovoid-shaped, and is enlarged in the cervical and lumbar regions.
The
spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and
peripheral nervous system. The spinal cord functions primarily in the
transmission of neural signals between the brain and the rest of the body but
also contains neural circuits that can separately control numerous reflexes and
central pattern generators. The spinal cord has three major functions: as a
conduit for motor information, which travels down the spinal cord, as a conduit
for sensory information in the reverse direction, and finally as a centre for
coordinating certain reflexes. The anatomy of the spinal cord itself consists
of millions of nerve fibres which transmit electrical information to and from
the limbs, trunk and organs of the body, back to and from the brain. The brain
and spinal cord are referred to as the Central Nervous System, whilst the
nerves connecting the spinal cord to the body are referred to as the Peripheral
Nervous System. The nerves which carry information from the brain to muscles
are called Motor Neurones. The nerves which carry information from the body
back to the brain are called Sensory Neurones. Sensory neurones carry
information to the brain about skin temperature, touch, pain and joint
position. Nerves called the spinal nerves or nerve roots, these nerves carry
information from the spinal cord to the rest of the body and from the body back
up to the brain.
There
are four main groups of spinal nerves, which exit different levels of the
spinal cord. These are in descending order down the vertebral column. Cervical
Nerves (nerves in the neck) supply movement and feeling to the arms, neck and
upper trunk, also control breathing. There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves which
branch off from the spinal cord. The peripheral region of the cord contains
neuronal white matter tracts containing sensory and motor neurons. Internal to
this peripheral region is the gray, butterfly-shaped central region made up of
nerve cell bodies. This central region surrounds the central canal, which is an
anatomic extension of the spaces in the brain known as the ventricles and, like
the ventricles, contains cerebrospinal fluid. The gray matter, in the centre of
the cord, is shaped like a butterfly and consists of cell bodies of inter
neurons and motor neurons. The white matter is located outside of the gray
matter. “Columns” of white matter carry information either up or down the
spinal cord.

ROOT ENERGY CENTRE (MOOLADHARA CHAKRA)
Its
Sanskrit name is Mooladhara Chakra i.e. connection to mother
earth — root (Mooladhara). It is
also called root chakra. Its physical counterparts are gonads or sex glands
(Two: Ovaries in females and Testes in males). Its location is lower abdomen in
sacral region below navel, between navel and genitals, sex organs, bladder,
circulatory system, prostate, womb. Its associated body parts are skin, womb,
uterus, bowels, gall bladder, prostate, ovaries/testes, circulatory system, the
reproductive system and the urinary system. Generally, calls for the resources
of body in an emergency. The base chakra is one’s connection to the earth.
This
is where one connects to one’s survival instinct. Here, one can be physically
fit and healthy. Balance is the key part to this chakra and if one has that,
one will be a grounded person. Its symbol is a red shaded lotus with four
petals. This chakra has four petals, around a square containing a
down-ward-pointing triangle. Garnet crystal is used in it as this is associated
with this chakra. Garnet also helps to purify and balance energy. It is also a
good protective stone and was used as a protective talisman. Other crystals
used for the base chakra are agate, bloodstone, tiger’s eye, ruby, hematite,
onyx, smoky quartz and rose quartz. Cedar wood incense/oil can be used for
meditating on the root chakra.
The
frequency of vibration of this chakra is 4 per second. Its main element is
earth. Its colour is red. Its incenses are cedar wood, myrrh, patchouli, musk
and lavender. Its ruling planets are Saturn and Earth. Its associated metal is
lead. Its trait (guna) is tamas. It is at the bottom of all the
spiritual powers. Generally the practitioner is blessed with spiritual powers
relating to material. Its function is survival and grounding. It builds
keenness of perception, untiring activity, and the drive to action,
inner-energy, courage, organising power and leadership. In case of its
disorder, a person becomes extremely restless, impatient, and short-tempered
and he suffers from vain-glory.
The practitioner may turn sexual
lust into spiritual power. Generally he attains spiritual powers relating to
water. It contributes to the attractiveness of a person. He becomes charming
and his nature becomes amiable. Generally its disorder makes a person selfish,
lustful, immoral and of angry disposition.
The sacral chakra is connected to sweetness, allowing pleasure and
creative expression. A balanced chakra leaves one feeling comfortable. One is
able to express one’s inner power and beauty. One will have a lot of physical
energy and healing energy. One will experience the joys of life. When it is
open and balanced, one has a lot of sexual energy and sexual power and one is
comfortable with sexuality. One is able to express one’s power easily. One has
a lot of physical energy, a strong sex drive, a lot of healing energy and a joy
of life.
Its
glandular connection is ovaries and testes. Its chief operating force is
attraction of opposites. The ovaries produce oestrogen and progesterone in
females whereas testes produce testosterone and androgens in males these
hormones are responsible for sexual difference and functions. It controls the
heat of the body, reproductive system, urinary system and the skin. In case of
mal-functioning, reproductive organs are damaged and the problem of less or
more menses or sex desire, loss of heat leading to development of fat,
unattractiveness of body takes place. Its emotional dysfunctions are unbalanced
sex drive, instability and feelings of isolation. Physical dysfunctions are
impotence, frigidity, bladder and prostate problems, lower back pain,
pre-menstrual syndrome, problems with menstrual flow, uterine fibroids, ovarian
cysts, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis and testicular disease. The ovaries of the female, located in the pelvic cavity,
release two main hormones. Secretion of estrogens by the ovarian follicles begins at puberty under the influence of FSH. Estrogens stimulate
maturation of the female reproductive system and development of the secondary
sex characteristics. Progesterone is released
in response to high blood levels of LH. It works with estrogens in establishing
the menstrual cycle. The testes of the male begin to produce testosterone at puberty in response to LH. Testosterone promotes
maturation of the male reproductive organs, development of secondary sex
characteristics and production of sperm by the testes.
Mooladhara Chakra
is very potent in case of animals. Animals like bipeds, quadruped and reptiles
etc. sense the internal movements of earth in advance and they run to the safer
places in time.
Some people anoint cedar perfume
or cedar wood, avocado, apricot, cinnamon and mint on root chakra and at the
centre of each foot or at the pulse points at the side of the ankles though not
through pregnancy making sure that the oils are diluted well in the ratio of
three drops of essential oil to 30 ml of carrier oil for accessing new psychic
work and clairsentience which enables one to pick up natural protective
instincts and psychic impressions from the past.

Adrenal glands assist in the creation of biles and digestive juices. Proper functioning of adrenal glands leads to qualities like keenness of perception, untiring activity, the drive to action, inner energy and courage. Its disorder forces a person to abuse his natural vigour to satisfy his lust. A sense of vain glory, restlessness and impatience etc. overcomes him. He becomes fearful and loses vigour to face the problems of life. Generally, he is unable to control his diet. Consequently, he suffers from stomach problems and hypertension. Adrenal glands produce a number of hormones like gluco-corticoids which control glucose-metabolism, mineralo-corticoids which control electrolyte balance and stress hormones like adrenaline and non-adrenaline which help us to cope with acute stress. It controls the urinary system, external genital organs, muscular-skeletal system and legs. Its under-working leads to dullness, timidity, less energy and less oxygenation, and its over working leads to high blood pressure, migraine, headache, acidity and vomiting. glands (numerous islets of langerans). It is located in upper abdomen from
navel to solar plexus. Its associated body parts are stomach, bladder,
circulatory system, prostate, womb pancreas, the digestive system, the urinary
system and the skin.
This
chakra has ten petals and a down-ward-triangle with a T-sign which represents
the fire element. Its symbol is a bright yellow shaded lotus with ten petals.
In it, citrine crystal is embedded as this is also excellent for the power of
the sun. It is energising and highly creative. Citrine raises self-esteem and
self-confidence. Basically, citrine is a wonderful stone as it promotes joy in
life. It can release one of those fear and negative traits. In the centre of
the chakra, sun stone is used. This stone can help one restore oneself and it
heightens intuition. It is also linked with good luck and good fortune. This
stone is connected to the power of light and is really good for those who
suffer with depression. It relieves stomach ulcers and harmonises the organs.
Other crystals connected to this chakra are quartz and topaz.
This
chakra is connected to the warm glowing sun, giving one vitality, energy and
the confidence to live life to the full. Its ruling planets are Mars + Sun. The frequency of vibration is
10 per second. Its main element is fire.

an expansive, outgoing, and sociable attitude to the world. One is able to feel
the sweetness of life. One has a sense of belonging and fitting in perfectly in
the universe. One feels daring and confident and able to take risks. Hence,
this is the chakra associated with the leader, the explorer and the inspiring
extroversive individual who is confident, optimistic and good humoured.
Its
glandular connection is pancreas. The pancreas,
located in the abdomen close to the stomach, is both an exocrine and an endocrine gland. The endocrine portion (islets of
langerhans) releases insulin and glucagons and smaller amounts of other
hormones to the blood. Glucagons which is
released by alpha (α) cells when glucose level in blood is low, stimulates the
liver to release glucose to the blood. Insulin is released by beta (β) cells when blood levels of
glucose (and amino acids) are rising. It increases the rate of glucose uptake
and metabolism by most body cells. Hypo secretion of insulin results in
diabetes. Insulin strives to
reduce blood glucose level while later tries to raise it. A controlled
secretion of these hormones results into balanced level of glucose in the
blood. It controls fire and production of digestive juices, regulates blood and
sugar level, controls sodium and water balance. Its under-working leads to
diabetes and over-working leads to low blood pressure, dizziness and even to
alcoholism. Its emotional dysfunctions like oversensitive to criticism,
addictive personality, aggressiveness and low self-esteem are needed to be in
control. Its physical dysfunctions are stomach ulcers, fatigue, diabetes,
allergies and weight around stomach.
Some
people anoint jasmine, musk and ylang ylang on solar plexus chakra with a
single drop making sure that the oils are diluted well in the ratio of three
drops of essential oil to 30 ml of carrier oil for accessing intuitive
awareness, boosting psychometric abilities and psychic touch helping to pick up
information about people's lives and their future by holding objects belonging
to them.

Its
Sanskrit name is Vishudh i.e. harmony with others, self-knowledge,
creativity, the power of choice, communication and self expression. Vishudh
Chakra is also called Throat Chakra. Its physical counterparts are
thyroid gland (one) located in the anterior throat, parathyroid glands (four)
located on the dorsal aspect of the thyroid gland. Its location is centrally at
base of neck, throat, ears, nose, teeth, and mouth. Its associated body parts
are throat, ears, nose, teeth, tonsils, voice-box, food-pipe, tongue, mouth and
neck. Their glandular connections are thyroid, parathyroid.

and organise ways of working with situations. One is able to make changes and
to assume responsibility for one’s personal needs.
Thyroid
follicles store colloid containing thymoglobulin,
a glycoprotein from which thyroid hormone is derived.
Thyroid hormone (TH) includes thyroxin (T4)
and tri-iodothyronine (T3), which is
concerned with the body’s heat, increase the rate
of cellular metabolism. Consequently, oxygen
use and heat production rise.
The parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH), which causes an increase in blood calcium levels
by targeting bone, the intestine and the kidneys. PTH release is
triggered by falling blood calcium levels and is inhibited by rising blood
calcium levels. Hyper-parathyroidism results in hyper-calcaemia and all its effects and in extreme bone wasting. Hypo-parathyroidism leads to hypo-calcaemia, evidenced by tetany and
respiratory paralysis. These hormones are necessary for mental and physical
development. It controls lungs and heart. It also controls temperature
regulation, governs energy production through the control of calcium. A person
becomes too talkative, ungrateful and mentally unsteady when the thyroid is
deranged. Its under-working leads to rickets, convulsion, teeth problems,
twisting of muscle, fatness and dullness. Its over-working leads to
over-growth, goitre and stone in kidneys etc. Its emotional dysfunctions are
perfectionism, inability to express emotions and blocked creativity. Its
physical dysfunctions are sore throats, neck ache, thyroid problems, hearing
problems and asthma.
Some
people anoint lavender, lilies, magnolia, narcissus and violet on throat chakra
with a single drop for accessing oracular wisdom, more advanced dream work, out
of body travel and 'clairaudience' or psychic hearing in which one hears voices
from other dimensions.

BROW ENERGY CENTRE (AAGGYA CHAKRA)
Its Sanskrit name is Ajna i.e. to perceive —
Ability to "see" other than the eyes, emotional intelligence,
intuition, wisdom (sixth sense). Aaggya Chakra is
also called third eye or brow chakra. Its counterpart is pituitary gland (one).
This chakra is situated slightly above and between
the eyebrows. Associated body parts are hypothalamus (A.N.S.), left eye,
ears and nose, base of skull.
Its symbol is an indigo
shaded lotus with two petals. This
lotus flower has two petals which represent eyes of the meeting serpent of
energy, which is around a circle containing a downward triangle. In the circle,
a cosmic energy is depicted. Amethyst and Azurite are embedded in it. Azurite
guides psychic and intuitive development. It cleanses and stimulates the third
eye and it is great for meditation and channelling. Amethyst is used as a
powerful healing stone and adds protection while meditating on the third eye.
In addition to it, Amethyst is great for spiritual vibration.
The frequency of vibration of
this Chakra is 96 per second. Its main element is also space. Its essential form is image. Its incenses are velvet
hyacinth and rose-geranium. Its colour is indigo. Its ruling planets are Neptune
& Jupiter. Its basic is light telepathic energy. Its crystals are purple
stones, amethyst, azurite, calcite, sapphire, fluorite and lapis lazuli. Its
associated metal is silver. Its trait (guna) is Satwa. This Chakra
has the ability to see other than the eyes. It is the centre of divine wisdom
and intuition (sixth sense). This Chakra is the seat of the soul and it
acts like a gateway to knowledge and expanded consciousness. It is here where
the Ida and Pingala, the spiralling life's currents meet.
Everything has a positive and a negative and it is the resting place between
the two. Stillness and bliss known as Sushumna is found herein. It is
here movement stops and the energy flows towards the sacred light of the divine
as we rest here in this inner space. It is a time of great healing where our
negative thoughts can be cleared from past, present and future. We can arise
from limitations and ascend towards liberation.
It is the centre of the highest
spiritual knowledge. The practitioner undergoes a fine experience and the bliss
of spiritual world. He becomes able to make out what others have in mind i.e.
he can read minds. He can also foretell and visualise past events like a movie.
Its glandular connection is pituitary. The pituitary gland
hangs from the base of the brain by a stalk
and is enclosed by bone. It consists of a hormone-producing glandular portion (anterior pituitary) and a
neural portion (posterior pituitary), which
is an extension of the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus
regulates the hormonal output of the anterior pituitary and synthesizes two
hormones that it exports to the posterior pituitary for storage and later
release. Four of the six adenohypophyseal hormones are tropic hormones
that regulate the function of other endocrine organs. Most anterior pituitary
hormones exhibit a diurnal rhythm of release, which is subject to modification
by stimuli influencing the hypothalamus.
The pituitary
gland produces hormones like TSH which
controls the thyroid, ACTH which controls the adrenals, LH and FSH which
ensures growth of body. It also controls the growth of body, brain power and
memory. Its malfunctioning leads to dwarfish or giant body, bullying and
mental-retardation. Due to its insufficient working, children tend to become
mean, heartless, mischievous, bullies, liars and disobedient. When it is open and balanced, the bearer has a healthy
sense of an ego or separate-self and may also have clairvoyant faculties. Its
emotional dysfunctions are nightmares, learning difficulties, hallucinations
and physical dysfunctions are headaches, poor vision, neurological disturbances
and glaucoma. Somatotropic hormone or
Growth hormone (GH) is an anabolic hormone that stimulates growth of all body tissues but especially
skeletal muscle and bone. It may act directly or indirectly via insulin-like
growth factors (IGFs). GH mobilizes fats,
stimulates protein synthesis, and inhibits glucose uptake and metabolism.
Secretion is regulated by growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) and growth hormone inhibiting hormone (GHIH) or somatostatin. Hyper secretion causes gigantism in children. Hypo secretion in children causes pituitary dwarfism.
Some people anoint papyrus flower,
lemon balm, sandalwood, juniper and thyme above and between eyebrows on brow chakra
diluting juniper well in olive or almond oil for accessing knowledge from
universal memory through meditation, divination or clairvoyance or psychic
seeing. It is not used for anointing during pregnancy.

awakening (knowledge) emerges out and the meaning of life changes absolutely.
He acquires a great wisdom, tenderness of heart and a strong will-power. He is
not affected by physical sufferings.
It is home to our pure spirit, this
is where a person becomes one with the divine. As one goes through the darkest
times, and tragic things happen, and when one has been disillusioned by
material gains, one searches for something to answer one’s calls, this is when
one starts to look within for the answers one seeks. When that inner peace is
found, one becomes whole again.
Its glandular connection is pineal. The pineal gland is located at the top
of head. Its primary hormone is melatonin, which influences daily rhythms. It releases the
hormones concerned with intuitive and extra-sensory powers. It manages,
organises, regulates and controls the functions of all other endocrine glands. It
regulates water balance; it controls sex desire. It stimulates growth of
nerves. The effect of malfunctioning leads to a premature sex development, sex
delinquency, increase in water content and the high blood pressure. It controls
the proper flow of cerebrospinal fluid and thus keeps the body strong and
healthy. Apart from it, it controls the level of
potassium and sodium balance in the body. Its emotional dysfunctions are
depression, obsessional thinking and confusion. Its physical dysfunctions are
sensitivity to pollution, chronic exhaustion and epilepsy.
Some people make use of lotus if possible or
frankincense in which case other fragrances like chrysanthemum or amber
camomile are used for the crown chakra though not through pregnancy for
accessing star magic such as mystical experiences and direct channelling.

The Chakras are the centres of spiritual and physical powers. All the chakras continually vibrate. Manipur Chakra and other chakras located below it have slow but strong movement while Anahat Chakra and the chakras above it have very swift motion. The Anahat Chakra establishes coordination among the Chakras below and above it. The Chakras located above Anahat Chakra are called space elements and those below it are called earth elements. Both of them are two different types of powers which meet at Anahat Chakra. Every Chakra has its own importance. However, all the Chakras are inter-related and inter-dependent. Any disturbance in one leads to a considerable disturbance in the functions of all other Chakras. By and large all the Chakras perform their physical functions naturally. But their spiritual powers remain dormant until awakened with the help of meditation.
This process of awakening latent spiritual powers is very fine, hard and time consuming. It demands a high level of self-control. There are 48 perpetually vibrating Chakras in our body. Of these, 7 are major Chakras namely Sahastrar Chakra, Aaggya Chakra, Vishudh Chakra, Anahat Chakra, Manipur Chakra, Swadhisthana Chakra and Mooladhara Chakra, 21 are minor Chakras and 20 are mini chakras.
Generally, Chakras may be awakened in any one of three ways: 1. By instinct: natural awakening at the time of birth. Meditation was an inborn trait in case of Guru Nanak Dev of India, Nostradamus of France, Rasputin of Russia and many others. Only a few people out of millions possess inborn skill of meditation; 2. By practice: awakening through exercise of meditation and 3. By pass-process: transmission of spiritual powers from one person to another.
The counterparts of these Chakras are respective endocrine glands. Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, directly into the blood rather than through a duct. The main endocrine glands include the pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland and parathyroid glands, thymus gland, pancreas, gonads (ovaries/testes) and adrenal glands. The hypothalamus is a neuro-endocrine organ. Other organs which are not so well known for their endocrine activity include the stomach, which produces such hormones as ghrelin. Endocrine organs are activated to release their hormones by humoral, neural or hormonal stimuli. Endocrine glands derive from all three germ layers. Those derived from mesoderm produce steroidal hormones; the others produce the amino–acid based hormones. The efficiency of all endocrine glands seems to decrease gradually as aging occurs.

THE HEIGHT OF DIVINE CONSCIOUSNESS
Samadhi is
natural state of equipoise. Samadhi
is the ultimate aim of yoga. When, while sitting in meditation, you become
unconscious of yourself and the act of meditation itself, that state is called Samadhi.
Samadhi is
a divine state of consciousness. Samadhi means "to bring together
to merge". Once Dharana has occurred, meditation and Samadhi
may follow. It has been explained as a non-dualistic state of consciousness in
which the perception of the experiencing subject becomes one with the
experienced object and in which the mind becomes still, one-pointed or
concentrated while the person remains wide awake. Hence, Samadhi is union
with the Divine. It refers to an abiding in which mind becomes very still but
does not merge with the object of attention and is, thus, able to watch and
gain insight into the changing flow of experience. The final step in the
eight-fold path of yoga is the attainment of Samadhi.
In
the condition of Samadhi, the body and senses are at peace as if asleep
yet the ability of mind and reasons are attentive as if awake. One goes beyond
consciousness. During Samadhi, we understand what it is to be an
identity without differences and how an enlightened soul can enjoy pure
awareness of this pure identity. The conscious mind drops back into that
unconsciousness from which it first emerged. There is an end to the separation
that is formed by the "I" and "mine" of our misleading
perceptions of reality. The mind does not differentiate between self and
non-self or between the object contemplated and the process of contemplation.
The mind and the intellect have come to a close and there is just the
experience of consciousness, reality, unimaginable and unexplainable ecstasy.
The
attainment of Samadhi is a hard task. Entering Samadhi primarily
takes great determination and maintaining it takes even more will. The opening
stages of Samadhi (laya and Savikalpa Samadhi) are
only provisional. Normal levels of meditation can be held involuntarily, as in
"being in the state of meditation" rather than obviously
"meditating". The ability to obtain positive results from meditation
is much easier said than done. Samadhi is the only stable reality. All
else is ever-changing and does not bring eternal peace or contentment.
Among
the minor Samadhis, Savikalpa Samadhi turns out to be the uppermost.
Ahead of savikalpa comes Nirvikalpa Samadhi, but there is
a great gap between these two. They are two drastically different Samadhis.
Again, there is something even beyond Nirvikalpa Samadhi called Sahaja
Samadhi. Savikalpa is a crossing point of trans-meditation and
higher awareness state — Asamprajñata. The state is so named because
mind preserves its consciousness that is why in Savikalpa Samadhi one
can experience guessing, thought, bliss and self-awareness. In Savikalpa
Samadhi, for a short period of time you misplace all human consciousness.
In this form, the conception of time and space is on the whole poles apart. For
an hour or two hours, you are fully in another world. When you are in Savikalpa
Samadhi, you see that almost everything is done; you have nothing to do. In
Savikalpa Samadhi, there are thoughts and ideas coming from different
places but they do not influence you. While you are meditating, you remain
composed and your inner being functions in a dynamic and confident way. From Savikalpa
Samadhi, everyone has to revisit to ordinary consciousness. Even in Savikalpa
Samadhi, there are grades. Some aspirants reach the highest grade while
less aspiring seekers reach a lower step of the ladder where everything is not as
lucid and dramatic as on the highest level. Asamprajñata is a step
forward from Savikalpa. According to Patañjali, Asamprajñata is
higher awareness position with non-existence of gross awareness.
Nirvikalpa or Sanjeevan
is the highest uplifting state of consciousness. Nirvikalpa Samadhi is
the highest Samadhi. It lasts for a few hours or a few days and then one
has to come down. Very often, one fails to remember his own name and age. One
cannot speak or think accurately. But through continued practice, one becomes
able to come down progressively from Nirvikalpa Samadhi and directly
function in a normal manner. In this state, there is no longer mind, duality, a
subject-object attachment or experience. Upon entering Nirvikalpa Samadhi,
the discrepancies we saw before have faded and we can see everything as one. In
this state, only pure awareness remains and nothing detracts from
comprehensiveness and perfection. When you are a little higher, when you have
turned out to be one with the soul in Nirvikalpa Samadhi, there will be
no ideas or thoughts at all. The realization of Nirvikalpa Samadhi can
never be satisfactorily expressed. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi, there is no
mind; there is only immeasurable peace and bliss. In Nirvikalpa Samadhi,
there is unlimited bliss. When you enter into Nirvikalpa Samadhi, still,
you not only be aware of bliss, but essentially grow into that bliss. There you
enjoy an utterly divine all-pervading ecstasy. When you are in Nirvikalpa
Samadhi, you see the universe as a tiny dot in the interior of your huge
mind. Staying in Nirvikalpa Samadhi is natural but even from this
condition one must ultimately return to ego-consciousness. Or else this highest
level of Samadhi leads to Nirvana,
which means total unity, the logical end of individual identity and also death
of the body. Usually, when one enters into Nirvikalpa Samadhi, one does
not want to rush back into the world again. If one stays there for eighteen or
twenty-one days, there is every chance that the soul will go away from the body
forever. One cannot function in the world while in that condition of
consciousness; it is simply not possible. But there is a divine privilege. If
the Supreme wants a particular soul to work here on earth, even after
twenty-one or twenty-two days, the Supreme can take that human into another
channel of lively divine consciousness and have him revisit to the earth-plane
to be active.
It is exclusively feasible to
stay in Nirvikalpa Samadhi and yet be completely functional in this
world. This state is known as Sahaja Nirvikalpa Samadhi or Sahaja
Samadhi. Sahaja Samadhi is by far the highest kind of Samadhi. In
this Samadhi, one is in the uppermost consciousness but, at the same
time, one is capable to work in the gross physical world. One upholds the
experience of Nirvikalpa Samadhi while at the same time entering into
worldly actions. One has become the soul and, at the same time, is utilising
the body as an ideal tool. In Sahaja Samadhi, one does the customary
things that a common human being does. But in the intimate recesses of the
heart, one is surcharged with divine enlightenment. When one has this Sahaja
Samadhi, one becomes the master of truth. One can go to the highest and
then come down to the earth-consciousness to manifest at his sweet will. Even
after achieving the highest form of consciousness, anyone is rarely blessed
with Sahaja Samadhi. For Sahaja Samadhi, the Supreme's
immeasurable grace is necessary. Sahaja Samadhi comes only when one has
recognized indivisible oneness with the Supreme.

EFFECT OF DIET IN MEDITATION
Human
body is made of three humours namely Vatt (Air), Kaph (Phlegm)
And Pitta (Bile) which are determinant of person’s mental and physical
qualities. Usually, only one type of humours dominates. Therefore, one’s diet
should be planned keeping one’s respective humour in view otherwise one has to
suffer with physical as well as mental health problems. Be choosy and
disciplined as far as health is concerned. For Vatt humour, the
indifferent things like cereal and oily food are suitable. For Pitta humour,
things having cooling temperament are suitable while for Kaph humour, things
having heating temperament are fit for consumption.
Do not follow the rule ‘Eat what you get’. Be
conscious of your intake. Take food
only when your body makes a demand for it. Take meal in time and do not stuff food. The condition of our mind and our
life-style are directly influenced with our intake. Our intake modifies the
inner climate of mind. The
favourable condition for controlling the mind may be moulded with a well
thought-out intake of food. As a matter of experience, the practice of meditation just after taking meal is
not feasible because digestive system hinders in concentration.
A nutrient, well-balanced,
vegetarian and simple diet is called Satwik diet. Satwik diet is
fit for meditation because it lets one undergo peace and concentration. A
non-vegetarian, fried and spicy diet and highly processed diet is called Tamasik
diet. Tamasik diet causes laziness. A mix of both satwik and tamasik
diet as well as junk food and fast food is called Rajasik diet. Rajasik
diet causes nervousness and a fall in concentration. Although human-being is
omnivorous yet a Satwik diet should be preferred as a routine for the
purification and the elevation of positive qualities.
Annamaya
kosha, the physical body visible to us, is made of the
food that we consume. Positive and negative properties of sun energy exist in
all types of natural foods and drinks in varying degrees which our body
requires in different proportions. Keep yourself away from preserved, high
sugar and fatty foods the quality of which becomes low due to high processing.
You should take a nutrient, well balanced and fresh diet containing green leafy vegetables, fruit, just cooked
vegetables, plenty of salads, sprout and roots rich with
high protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fibre etc. As a rule, an ideal ratio of protein,
carbohydrates and fats should normally be 100 gram: 400 gram: 100 gram.
Like meditation, the mental balance may also be
discovered through food. Avoid intoxicants. Do you notice any person, who is
drunk, practising meditation? A person, in case of intoxicant state, is in a
darkened state of mind in which meditation is not easily possible. Food items
that cause harm to body are also injurious to the mental state. Abstain from
those things which are unfit for both mind and body.
In case of empty stomach, no meditation is
possible. Mind works well when you are well satisfied with sufficient food.
Hunger creates physical and mental disorders and deficiencies. As body becomes
weak in case of less, imbalanced and deficient intake, so happens with the
mind. As a rule, avoid the practice of both overeating and undereating.
A good meal is different for different categories
of people. A good meal is that, after consumption of which, you feel healthy,
you sleep well and your digestive system is in order. More quantity of food is
needed in case of men, growing children, people doing hard physical work and
pregnant women in comparison to women, people doing mental work, old people and
people suffering from illness. However, the quality of food must be high and it
cannot be compromised what come may.
